Acadia Healthcare is the largest stand-alone behavioral health provider in the United States, with a network of more than 250 locations offering inpatient psychiatric care, addiction treatment, and outpatient services. It’s a company that touches thousands of lives. And it was created by Waud Capital Partners, the private equity firm founded by Reeve Waud in 1993.
As Reeve approaches his 38th wedding anniversary with Melissa Wheeler Waud, the connection between personal commitment and professional achievement is hard to overlook. As documented in the August 1988 notice in the New York Times, the same qualities that have sustained a marriage since August 20, 1988—patience, loyalty, and a willingness to invest for the long term—are also the qualities that built Acadia from a startup into a national platform.
Founding Acadia Healthcare
Waud Capital formed Acadia in late 2005 with a clear mission: acquire, develop, and operate a national network of behavioral health facilities. By 2011, Acadia Healthcare had completed a merger with PHC, Inc. and become a publicly traded company. At that point, the company operated 34 facilities with roughly 1,950 licensed beds across 18 states, positioning it as the country’s top publicly traded pure-play inpatient behavioral health provider.
That was just the beginning. In the years since, Acadia has expanded to more than 250 facilities across the United States and Puerto Rico, offering a broad range of services. The company’s growth reflects both the rising demand for behavioral health services and the strength of its operational foundation.
A Marriage That Preceded It All
Before Waud Capital, before Acadia, there was a wedding. On August 20, 1988, Reeve Waud and Melissa Ann Wheeler were married at the First Church of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut. Both were graduates of Middlebury College’s class of 1985. The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Olin Robinson, the college’s president. Coverage appeared in the Chicago Tribune wedding announcement.
Melissa’s parents, Russell Phillip and Dorothy Ann Wheeler, were based in Greenwich and Verbier, Switzerland. Reeve’s parents, Cornelius Byron and Corinna Roosevelt Reeve Waud, lived in Lake Forest, Illinois. Reeve’s background is detailed at Reeve Waud. The union of these two families marked the beginning of a partnership that has now lasted nearly four decades.
Waud Capital’s Broader Portfolio
Beyond Acadia, Waud Capital’s portfolio reflects the same growth-oriented philosophy. Recent investments include Fusion Healthcare and PharmAlliance in the healthcare sector, and Science Exchange in the technology space. The firm has completed upward of 480 investments since its founding and manages approximately $4.6 billion in assets. In 2024, it released its first Responsible Investing report, reflecting a commitment to integrating governance factors into its investment process.
For Reeve Waud, the 38th anniversary marks another chapter in a life defined by sustained commitment—to his family, to his firm, and to the companies and communities that benefit from both. Updates on Acadia Healthcare’s appointment of new executive leadership show the company’s continued growth and evolution.
