I've been meaning to share this tip with you all for months, but you know how life is. This is by far THE BEST piece of advice I got after Thaddeus was born and we struggled with getting him to sleep in his crib. I call it, "The Heating Pad Trick." However, I can't take full credit. Our pedi's nurse suggested we give it a shot and I will forever be in debt to that woman. So without further ado, I give you the heating pad trick.
HEATING PAD TRICK
1. Place a Heating Pad between the baby's mattress and his/her sheet and drape the cord down the side. This is important...do not put the pad on top of the sheet or you run risk of allowing the baby to tangle himself/herself up in the cord.
2. When getting baby ready for nap/bedtime turn the heating pad on the lowest setting and allow it to warm up while you feed baby, read to baby, sing songs, etc.
3. Once baby is asleep transfer him/her to his/her crib. Be sure to lay baby in the spot where the heating pad is warming.
4. TURN OFF THE HEATING PAD.
5. Walk away.
It's that simple. Seriously. Especially if you have one of those babies that wakes up every.single.time you put him/her down. Thaddeus was terrible as we had to hold him upright after every feeding for 10-15 minutes due to reflex. At this point, he was always warm and snuggly and hated being put down on a cold mattress. Heating pad trick? A lifesaver. This time around, I started using the trick from day one in our bassinet. I'm pretty sure from now on I need to just gift a heating pad to every new mother.
Oh and for what it's worth, we are still using it at 6 months old and often use it to put her down drowsy/in and out of sleep instead of holding her until she's completely out of it.
Go on, go give it a shot. You won't regret it!
