Toddler vs. Tree: HELP!

Ok, so I need to get the tree up.  I've been dragging my feet.  Two dogs have never stopped me, but a 15 month old (shit, ok, almost 16 month old) has me frozen in my tracks.  How on earth do I keep him out of the tree?  There aren't really a lot of placement options and I can just see him pulling, yanking, and playing with the lights, ornaments, branches, etc.  Ok, so it's not like he's a cat, but I'm seriously terrified of him yanking the damn thing over on himself.  So before I get the boxes out and all the decor that goes with it, I need some ideas.  How do I keep him out of it?  And honestly, did your kid ever even get into the tree?

  1. We put ours in the living room because I decided if it was out of our view all the time (and out of J's reach) it wouldn't be worth putting up. I just put the plastic and plush and crappiest ornaments on the bottom and nicer ones out of his reach. It's pre-lit, so he's not pulling strands off, but he def likes to inspect it all.the.time. And add "ornaments" to the tree, but it's not as bad as i thought it would be.

  2. Looove your blog! New follower! As for keeping a toddler out of the tree, let me know if you find out! I have a two year old and he is constantly trying to get ornaments off the tree!

  3. Honestly? We're not having a tree this year. Boo! We have twins who are 14 months old and into EVERYTHING. Plus our house is very small and the only room we have for the tree is the living room. My husband and I have discussed it several times, trying to decide what it would take to babyproof an area of the living room with a tree, and ultimately decided to skip the tree this year. 2 toddlers + 1 preschooler + 2 cats = more than I'm willing to deal with if we put a tree up. They'll still get one at Grandma and Grandpa's house on Christmas eve and Christmas day when we go there.

  4. OMG, and if I was feeling kind of bad about while I was leaving that last comment, the fact that my 14 month old son toddled down to the nursery and got his hand stuck under the toybox (how is that even possible?!) while I was sitting here typing has convinced me that no tree this year is the best idea I've ever had. ;)

  5. We bought a little 4 1/2' tree and put it on a table. It actually looks really cute and E loves looking at it from the floor. His toy box is also blocking the table it's on so it's totally out of reach. I love it

  6. I made sure all lower ornaments were kiddie safe and was super vigilant the first two days and consistent with punishment if pulled on it. She sees the tree now as something special and I've let her hang a couple homemade ornaments on it herself! She feels ownership now!
